Killer Kettlebell Stance & Strength Training

Well it's all done but the compiling.
Finally after months of video work, photos and writing I have Killer Kettlebell Stance & Strength Training nearly completed.
In my other ebooks I focused on traditional strength training and stamina, this time I am taking kettlebells and putting them to work with a focus on the strengths that martial artists need.
Along with Kettlebells I have included how to use and even make a 25lb medicineball and a 60lb Ruck Sack. The last filming was completed on our first 100 degree day and nearly ended me...
However it made my oldest son's day to watch dad "suck eggs". Mean kid ;-)
I have included several instructional video clips of exercises and photos of stance positions including how to hold the kettlebell to force your body to handle greater ballance and troque issues.
Work out schedules, exercises and training ideas are all included in this ebook.
And if you can't afford to buy kettlebells I have included written instructions for building the same kettlebell handles that I use. They can handle more than 200lbs each and are infinately adjustable when it come to weight veriations.
Watch here or at my website for the release www.johnsebooks.com or my ebay page.
Purchasing Killer Kettlebells on eBay will save you $10 from the official website price of $29.95
John Roche

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stancetraining.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-ebook-killer-kettlebell-stance.html' title='NEW EBOOK!! Yes that's part of the reason I train alone, it tends to make lifting partners nuts. But in truth my routines change about once every 6 weeks which is good because of the stagnation and burnout factors.
So what have I been doing lately. Well a really fun routine.
Monday:
A-1: Alternate DB Bench Press.
A-2: Chins
These exercises are done in an alternating fashion with each new set starting on the minute mark. In other words when you finish your last rep watch the clock, when the second hand hits 12:00 start the next set of the other exercise.
the target is to get 20 reps in four sets. I start with a weight that requires six or seven sets and try to increase the reps on atleast one set each workout. Once 4 sets is attained I increase the weight by 10% and start over again.
Take a five minute break and then do Deadlifts. You are shooting for 15-18 total reps within 3-sets. When you can do that increase the weight by 10% and work back down to three sets again.
Take a two minute break and do three sets of one arm kettlebell swings. Each set is 10 per side.
Stretch and relax.
Thursday:
B-1: Military Press
B-2: Renegade Rows
Use the same reps and set scheme as above. One note: on renegade rows and alternated press above one rep is counted when you have done one for the right and one for the left.
Take a five minute break and then do Front Squats. Your target is 20 reps in four sets. When you can do that increase the weight by 10%.
Take a two minute break and then do three sets of 10 one arm kettlebell swings. Again that is 10/side.
Tuesdays & Friday:
Each of the following is started on the minute as above.
Divebomber Push-ups
Hindu Squats
Explosive Push-ups (clapping push-ups)
Hack Squats
Jump Lunges
Hindu Push-ups
Planks
On your first day find out what your max is for each exercise. Divide that in half and use that number for your first weeks training. Each week there-after increase it by 2 - 4 reps.
Start off with three sets doing one after the other in circut training fashion, again starting each new exercise on the minute mark.
Wednesday & Saturday:
Ruck Sack Hike
I use 60lbs of sand in a standard military ruck. Check your starting time and start walking for a set distance say 2 miles. Whatever your time is the next time you hike try and reduce it by a few seconds. Continue to do so until you are nearly running and then increase the distance by half and start the timed walking all over again.
May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Owning up

Since God asked Adam those most famous of questions "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" Man has done everything in his power to NOT own up when he (we) are wronge or have done wronge.
The old cartoon strip Family Circus occasionally had the children being asked "Who did this" and so true to life they would all blame the same person "not me".
Unfortunately adults are not much better, doing things that they know are wronge and then blaming others when they get cought. You know, it's the Polices' fault, 0r the IRS or those ***** credit cards. It's the tobbacco company's fault or Micky D's fault that I'm fat. It's my parents fault I'm so messed up (well it is, just ask my Dr).
Ya nobody likes to be wronge, especially when they are, well, wronge. As Christians though we have no choice but to "man up" and admit when we are wronge. The symptom of our depravity is denial of truth, it started with Adam and eventually, 'in the fulness of time' resulted in the death of Jesus on the cross (oh you didn't realize that was what He died for?). Yes that was exactly what He died for. He died as the blood attonement for sin against a Holy & Just God. What is sin against God? Anything we do that is opposed to God's will for man as revealed in the Bible.
I will be one of the first to admit that 'manning up' is not fun, not easy and rarely pleasant, but it is what we are called by Paul to do when ever we take communion or for that matter as a regular course of daily evaluation "For by the grace given to me I ask every one of you not to think of yourself more highly than you should think, rather to think of yourself with sober judgment on the measure of faith that God has assigned each of you."
I get the opportunity to spend a sizable amount of time around drunks, and let me tell you when they think of themselves (measure there skills, value, wisdom, etc...) they are either VERY over inflating or VERY devaluing. It's the same with their measure of distance and time, thats why they have so much trouble stopping that car that they weren't actually driving when that other guy pulled out and hit them.
Have to go for now, more in a bit....
May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

In the Beginning there was Logic

I wanted to go back and expound on an earlier post for a couple of readers so here is more on the greatest first line of any book ever written.

Gen 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth";
What an incredible verse. This one simple verse is as deep as eternity and as wide as infinity. Look at the some of the elements that are here. We have a "beginning" we have prime cause for that beginning "God" and we have a description of what it was that He began "the heavens and the earth".
But there is more we can see three perfect arguments against the stance that there is no Truth.

First we have time. This is a Truth that is non-arguable. Just think about it for a moment, oops there it is, time. No matter where in the universe you go time exist. The use of clocks may not but the measure of time still does. Be it measured by the rotation of a planet, the changing of seasons, the movement of the stars, or the speed of light. Time exists in all places. Are you reading this blog now or earlier or later. Yes you exist in the now, you may live in the past, you may long for the future but you exist in the now. On the other hand God is outside of time. He is Eternal, time was created a point in eternity and will never cease to exist from that moment on. Why because time is measured by the order of events, I started this blog earlier and am writing it now hoping to finish it later. Casting our crowns before the thrown of Yahweh is a mark in time. It have an order, there-for it is a measurement of time. before we were casting our crowns down what were we doing and what did we do following. Because God created time, time exists.
Did God did not create time out of His need to mark events. He created time so that we would understand the difference between us, finite, created beings, and Him, infinite, eternal, everlasting. We can't understand His eternal existence because everything in our experience has a beginning, a point of coming into existence. It also has a point of ceasing to exist, like my last car.

Then there is the Truth of space. the heavens and the earth. These are "separate" entities. They exist in different places at the same time. Space is marked by distance, and by proximity. Think about the page you are looking at right now. Each letter is separated by a gap. That gap is a space that allows us to distinguish one individual letter from another. The same thing is true of planets, trees, atoms, and people. There is a physics law that says it is impossible for to objects of like mass to occupy the same space at the same time. If you have ever gone to a rock concert or an international soccer match you experiences this truth when everyone around you was trying to fill the space you were already in.
The truth of space is inarguable by logical means. If someone tries to just tell them you can't understand what they are saying and ask them to come "closer". Were space not a Truth then they would not be separate from you and their voice would have no need to travel to you.
No matter where you go there you are once again the Truth of space. If you could fly at light speed to the ends of the universe you would still be separated from the rest of the universe by space, and within that vast space you would occupy a minute amount of space.

The next Truth is the existence of Matter. Many puns could be had with this one. The law that I mentioned in conjunction with space also apply to matter. We tend to measure space by points of matter. A house is measured from wall to wall, a trip from home to home, a kiss from lip to lip.
While I have heard several people try to actually argue the true existence of matter I am yet to see them pass through a wall (apart from a lot of pain and destruction), they usually want to sit in a chair during the discussion but the doesn't "matter". They might even try to elaborate the matter by stick my chest matter with their finger matter. But that really doesn't matter either.
No matter where they choose to argue about matter they still are matter, sitting matter in a multi-story accumulation of matter located on a large ball of matter that is bathed in a form of matter that we call light.
Even the void of space, some scientist are saying today, is actually a form of matter.
So in short the Truth of Matter, matters any time, any place, no matter how far the distance or how wide the space.

There is one more pivotal, awesome Truth buried in this little verse, the hinge pin verse for all of creation. That truth is the truth of causality. It for every effect there is a cause. That Prime Causality is God. All of creation, seen and unseen can trace it's cause back to God. Or as John states in the parallel to Gen 1:1 - John 1:3 speaking of The Word " All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being."
As a people we are always looking for that one cause in our lives. If you have any abnormal behavior counselors try to get to the origin of the behavior, the original cause for this effect (what is seen in your life).
When an airplane crashes hundreds of people are pulled in to assess the scene and determine the cause of the accident. We do autopsies to determine the cause of death, and cartoonist make a fortune make in jokes about who cause the writing on the wall or the spilling of the milk (Not Me is always at fault).
We know in the depth of our souls that there is a Prime Causality, the First Cause. That cause was not a big bang (though he could have used one). Why?, because evolutionary science counters the evidence laws when it states "nothing existed and then that nothing exploded".
Nothing is the only thing that can come from nothing. Witness the mathematical equivalent 0x0=0, 0-0=0, 0+0= thats right 0!
Now there is a huge mis-understanding when it comes to the law of causality. The law does not say that the cause of the effect has to have a cause as well. When a child (or even an adult) asks "so who caused God" they are applying a non-existent truth. The cause is a cause not an effect, only the effect has to have a cause.
In the example of the big bang there does have to be a cause for the effect (bang), a "what made that happen".
God the Father is not an effect, He is the First Cause, the ultimate reality behind the physical law that we see acted out in our lives.

May the Lord cause His blessing to fall upon you and your household.
John

Painfully Hillarious

One of my coworkers found this on YouTube.... Reading through a few verses or even a chapter during a rough night only to forget what was read by the next morning.

When it comes to reading the scriptures there are basically three way you can read.

Casually reading for a few minutes now and then. This is relaxed reading of the Word, just for the sake of reading the Word. Reading the Bible for fun and to fill time without digging deep is still reading the Bible. Jesus told His disciples about the Holy Spirit "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you." You and I were not there but His words were recorder for us and it is through those words that the Holy Spirit will bring to life remembrances. So ANY regular reading of the bible give Him something to draw from.

Contemplative reading. Contemplatively of meditative reading takes longer but can be greatly revealing and infinitely rewarding. Whenever you read the Bible it is a good idea to pray of understanding and illumination before you begin but with this type of reading you need to take time when you are done reading, whether a verse, line or book, and reflect upon what you have read and what it might mean in your life. Look at the eternal lessons, the today in my life lessons, what does this scripture reveal about God and His character and what does it reveal about me and my character?

In depth study. This is when you read not only the verses or chapter but ask the big questions and do word studies. Get out your dictionary and your concordance and start looking at the meanings of the words in the Greek and Hebrew. Look up the historical significance of the region where the event took place. Find out what you can about the people being addressed, were they farmers, shepherds, Pharisees or Samaritans? What did the original hearers actualy understand the teaching to mean.

Reading the Bible in a well rounded fashion includes all three of these methods. The focus may change over time as to which one you give the greatest effort and importance to, but to some extent all three must be present in your life to get the most from God's love letter to his bride.

May the Lord bless you and your household.

John

9 round card deck tabata routine

Ya' I know that's a lot of words for a title, but,,,,, well you'll understand in a minute.
As I noted in and earlier entry, I have gone back to using the Tabata protocol for a couple, three days/weeks. I really enjoy it. It is tough but great.
Well I also have a problem with getting bored easily so I came up with a great way to play around with Tabata for each and every routine while using a given set of movements.
To start with you will need a deck of cards. Then assign exercises to different card groups.
Since I want to do ab work with each workout I have assigned the face cards ab movements
King-prone ab bicyclers; Queen-prone leg extensions; Jack-bench crunches; Aces-alternating side crunches. Now the number cards I have broken into 4 groups. Red 1-5 = recumbant bike; Red 6-10 = stepper; Black 1-5 = hack squats; and Black 6-10 = squats to rising knee ups.
Before the workout you draw a Nine card hand, lets say King, 2 of Clubs, 4 of spades, Ace, Ace, 10 of hearts, 2 of spades, Joker, 3 of hearts.
Each card eaquals a 20 second round with a 10 second break to get to the next station and write down the reps completed.
To start the workout do a 5 minute warm up of some sort. I use the recumbant bike usually.
Then do your first round
20 seconds: Prone ab cyclers
10 seconds rest
20 seconds; hack squats
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: hack squats
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: alternating side crunches
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: alternatind side crunches
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: stepper
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: hack squats (AGAIN!!)
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: Joker (joker = whatever exercise you absolutely HATE the most!) BURPEES
10 seconds rest
20 seconds: recumbant bike
5 minutes cooldown (once again I choose the recumbant bike.

Now you can use the same 9 card draw for the entire week or you can draw a new hand before each workout.. which is what I do. You will NEVER get bored. Each month you can change the exercises choose from.
If you are not interested in ab work then choose some other total body stressers or other machine to use.
Try sprint in place, jump rope, grasshoppers, jump squats, treadmill, versaclimber, heavybag work, shadow boxing, mountain climbers, etc.........
To help keep track of time, which is vital you can do what I did and download a Tabate timer MP3. I used audacity to add 5 minutes of silence to the beginning for the warmup period and add the extra 20 second set.
I have also used audacity to mix several different soundtracks for the routine ranging from "Appite for Distruction" to audio books and audio bible studies.

Have fun and keep a buck near.
John

White Dragon Kung Fu Videos for sale

I have been going through my vid and am in the proscess of selling off several Pai Lum Kung Fu tapes.
Here is the ebay auction page
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300302513682&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123
These were instructors classes taught by Master Glenn C Wilson, former student of Grandmaster Daniel K. What more powerful and perfect way to begin a book, no The Book.
So many truths are poured into the very first verse of the very first chapter of the Book of Books. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
That one verse tells us that there was a beginning, a starting point for time. There was a starting point for matter, God created the heavens and the earth. There was a starting point for space, God created the Heavens. And before that starting point, that beginning there was God.

The Apostle John elaborates on this truth when he writes the first verse of the Gospel of John.
"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God".
Before there was time, space or matter there was God the Father and God the Son.

In Genisis 1:2 we are given just a touch more... "the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters" God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit were all present and involved in the creation of time, space and matter...

Staight Foreward & Simple

Ya' that pretty well describes me, but that is not the topic at this moment.
I had an emailer ask what my normal (prefered) lifting routine consisted of these days and it is best described as "Straight foreward & simple".
Monday:
Shoulder press
Bench
Chins
Squats super-setted with Pullovers

Wednesday
Curls
Prone Triceps press
Standing Calf Raises
Seated Calf Raises

Friday
Shoulder Press
Bench
Chins
Deadlifts super-setted with Pullovers

All exercises are done using a 5x5 scheme with the last two sets as the true working sets. The workouts are short a intense, starting from the first exercise which is done in SUPER SLOW motion and ends with a 15 second static contraction on the last exercise.
Each muscle group is gets three sets without without a break. While it take a few workouts to get the super/slow set timing correct (60 seconds up/60 seconds down), the workouts only take about 20 minutes total, so you can be in and out of the gym in no time.
If you need regular days each week to train you WILL not like Wolter's routine as the number of rest day vary each week.
I loved the pump I acheived using the system and plan to use it as my fallback routine.
If you are looking for a real change you can sign up for the short email course at http://www.e-size.com . Once there you can download the initial pdf with week one and the general routine outline after that you will get an email the day before each of the next 5 workouts.
I am not receiving any commission or kickbacks for this recommendation, I just think it's worth a few weeks if you want a change and some fun.
May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Tabata Protocal

If you are looking for a great challange to add to your training then the Tabata Protocal might just be it.
Tabatas challenge every aspect of your training, mental, physical and emotional. It also is one of the quickest ways to boost your fat burning engine.
I USED to use the "protocal" reqularly but as with many things (bible study, time with friends, fishing, etc.. ) it fell by the way side when life became haried and stressfull.
This week marks the return of it to my schedule.
Here is a simple outline incase you have never heard of Tabatas before.

You can use nearly any exercise to apply Tabatas to. Recubant bike, treadmill, jogging in place, hill running, squats, cleans, heavy bag work.

This is what the routine looks like.
5 minutes warm up at approximately 40% of your training max.
20 seconds all out effort.
10 seconds total rest.
20 seconds all out effort.
10 seconds total rest.
20 seconds all out effort.
10 seconds total rest.
20 seconds all out effort.
10 seconds total rest.
5 minutes cool down at approximately 40% of your training max.

Thats it for beginners - and old farts like me.
Apply the protocal 3-4 days a week.
As you get better able to handle the stress of Tabatas you can increase the number of cycles you do from 4 to 7.

Make sure to get a physical before launching into Tabatas because they are outragiously intense.

I am adding 4 tabata cycles three days a week using a recumbant bike, for now.
This spring I will head back out doors and apply Tabatas to the sled drag. I LOVE the sled.

May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Finding study helps.

Studying the scriptures can sometimes be a daunting task when you are digging in to word study, imagery, traditions and historical backgrounds. Daunting but Rewarding.
There are several fantastic programs availible on the marked and you can spend hundreds of dollars on any one of them,,,,,, I did.
But if you are student, pastor or just a money contious follower of Christ you will be glad to know that there are several FREE, yes I said FREE! programs and websites to help you grow in your faith.
First and formost my favorite is E-Sword here you will find one of the largest and most extensive study tool availible, either for pay or for free. If there are not enough resources on the site proper then a simple web search for "e-sword addons" will dredge up literally hundreds of reader created studies and papers.
Next has to be Crosswire's Sword Project also containing a plorithera of bibles, commentaries and additional writings.
Then there is the Online Bible which has many of the same features listed above.
Now in all honesty, my choice as to favorite has as much to do with appearance and personal taste as with volume of matereal availible, so check them all out and make your own choice.
Now for those who don't want to add another program to their computer try one of the MANY websites dedicated to study of the Scriptures.
The Bible Gate Way is a great site with commentairies, dictionaries, illustrations and many other heplful tools.
Bible.org is ecellent for indepth studies via sermons and well written articles, as well as a collection of bible study tools.
Currently my favorite though is the Bible Studio which has just about everything you could want for study all in one location. And for Pastors and teachers they even have verses availible already set on backgrounds for powerpoint or handouts, simplifiing sermon prep greatly.

These are only a few of my favorites, I hope to add a list of links dedicated specifically to scripture study sites in the near future so keep cheching in.

May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Punching Through

If you are a martial artist who does push ups, iether knuckle or palm, and would like to really increase your punching power then this is for you.

No, you don't have to buy any special equiptment or apparatus. All you need is a good hard floor and a couple of face cloths.

Fold the face cloth in half and then in half again so you have a simple four layer square. Lay down on the floor in the push up position and place your fists on the cloths at your side. (Start with your fist in the supinated postion, that is palm towards the shoulder) No do your push up as if it were a double punch, making sure to rotate the fist to the pronated position and to slide your fists on the cloth towards your shoulder.

If the floor you are training on creates too much friction to allow rotation and slide of the cloth simply place a piece of wax paper between the cloth and floor.

In the begining this movement will require a lot of work from your shoulders and wrists but there will be great dividends paid out with diligent practice. Until you master the movements use the GTG (grease the groove) method of training. Do a few push ups several times a day every day. In the matter of a week you will be amazed at how much strength and power you will gain.

This method of doing pushups specifically targets the muscles used in punching plus you train the muscular and nerve pathways to move in the correct way. All of that translates into better, faster, stronger and more powerfull punches.

Play with hand positions and heights to really challange yourself.
May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Leaving Tracks

I love old books, especially old bibles. My eldest son found an old pocket New Testament at a garage for a quarter and gave it to me for my birthday. It was the greatest gift I was blessed to receive that year.
It wasn't that the bible was published in 1918, the second year the American Bible Society distributed bibles and the last year of WWI and so was a war bible that made the book so precious to me. It was the combination of my son thinking of me while he could have spent the money on himself and that the bible is marked with the journey of not one but two different people's spiritual journey.
Simple initials & X's tell of the reading path for both men (brothers who shared the Good News). The book screams "YOU ARE NOT ALONE, SOMEONE HAS BEEN HERE BEFORE". Haven't you ever longed for that knowledge, that simple kinship.... brother, you're not alone I have been right where you are standing and I know what you are feeling.... you are not alone.

Mark your journey, not just with the people you touch for the Kingdom as you walk your daily walk, but mark your place, leave your thoughts, your hopes, your prayers so that one day someone who may be searching the used book bin, or estate auction or garage sale might find the bread crumbs of your journey.

At the other end of the spectrum is a beautiful bible I purchased from an estate sale. It was in near new condition dispite being over a century old. The binding wasn't even broken. Four generations could have left a simple jot or tiddle and yet, nothing. Not a pencil mark or dog ear.
The bible is a jewel and yet so sad a testimony.

Leave a trail for others to follow.
May the Lord bless you and your household.
John

Stance Training

The name says it all. Among my favorite activities are teaching & practicing kung fu (Tong-yi Ch'uan fa) and the study and teaching of Theology, both proper and general.

My hope is to share both of those joys with you as a reader and hopefully help you to strengthen you stance in life along the way.

The post my come in pipe bursts at time and trickle in at other times but that is pretty much the way life goes.
